It’s important to be cautious during the winter weather, especially while you shovel your walks or driveway. Between slippery snow and unseen ice on your surfaces to not dressing correctly, the chance of injury can be rather high. Here are a few tips to ensure you stay safe and injury-free while shoveling this winter season:
- Make sure you stretch before you grab the shovel. You’re doing physical work so your muscles can’t be stiff. This could result in injury if you lift the shovel wrong or hit some ice.
- Make sure you wear multiple warm layers. You need to keep your extremities warm but have the option to peel off a layer if you get too hot. You’ll probably end up breaking a sweat from shoveling. Don’t forget a hat and gloves, either!
- Remember the phrase “lift with your knees, not with your back.” It’s very important to keep good posture while you’re shoveling. Bad posture will put a strain on your back, which would cause you to sprain it, throw it out, or worse.
- Because you will (most-likely) break a sweat with shoveling, it’s important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water.
- Take frequent breaks. It’s recommended to take a break every 5 minutes or so to let your body recover. This is also the perfect opportunity to hydrate.
- If you are physically unable to shovel, consider getting a snowblower, which is much easier on you, or hire a company to help you!
